Survival Phrases lesson 4 - Basic Hindi Greetings
Today, we'll cover basic greetings. As there are quite a few to cover, let's jump right in.
In Hindi, we can use the word नमस्ते| (namasTe) as a universal greeting. We use it both when greeting and when parting, usually while saying namaste.
Let’s say it slowly now: नमस्ते| (namasTe)
Now let's hear it once again: नमस्ते| (namasTe)
There is also a variation of this same greeting that sounds a little more formal, or plural. This is नमस्कार| (namaskaar).
Let’s break it down by syllable: नमस्कार| (namaskaar)
Now let's hear it one more time: नमस्कार| (namaskaar)
Another way to make नमस्ते| (namasTe) sound more respectful is to add the particle -jii at the end, as in namasTe-jii. We can also add -jii to the name of a person when we want to address that person with respect.
Let's hear it once again: namasTe-jii
namasTe-jii
In Hindi, we do not usually change the greetings based on the time of day. That is to say, we seldom use some literal translations of the English greetings "Good morning" and "Good night." Anyway, you can use the greeting for "Good night" more easily if you wish. "Good night" in Hindi is शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii).
Let’s break it down by syllable: शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii)
Now let's hear it once again: शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii)
The first word, शुभ (SHuBH), means "good."
Let’s say the word slowly now: शुभ (SHuBH)
शुभ (SHuBH)
रात्री (raaTrii), which in Hindi is "night," follows this.
शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii)
शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii)
And, शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii)
In India, there are many religions, and Indians are typically very tolerant toward different creeds. Often, Hindi speakers may choose to greet others according to their religion. A typical Hindu greeting, both for "hello" and "good-bye," is हरी ओम| (harii om).
हरी ओम| (harii om)
Let’s break it down by syllable: हरी ओम| (harii om)
हरी ओम| (harii om)
Another common Hindu greeting we use similarly is राम-राम| (raam-raam).
राम-राम| (raam-raam)
राम-राम| (raam-raam)
If you want to greet a Muslim with a typical Muslim expression, you may use सलाम अलैकुम| (salaam-alaikum).
सलाम अलैकुम| (salaam-alaikum)
Let’s break it down by syllable: सलाम अलैकुम| (salaam-alaikum)
Now let's hear it once again: सलाम अलैकुम| (salaam-alaikum)
You can respond to someone who greets you with सलाम अलैकुम| (salaam-alaikum), with वालैकुम अस्सलाम| (vaalaikum-assalaam).
Let’s break it down by syllable: वालैकुम अस्सलाम| (vaalaikum-assalaam)
Now let's hear it once again: वालैकुम अस्सलाम| (vaalaikum-assalaam)

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so गुड लक! (guud Lak!), which means "good luck" in Hindi.
