Survival Phrases lesson 5 - How to Say Goodbye in Hindi
In this lesson, we'll introduce "good-byes."
As we learned in the previous lesson, नमस्ते| (namasTe) can mean both "hello" and "good-bye." However, this is not the only way of saying good-bye in Hindi!
A parting expression that we can use for all occasions is फिर मिलेंगे| (phir milenge), which means "See you again."
फिर मिलेंगे| (phir milenge)
Let’s break it down by syllable: फिर मिलेंगे| (phir milenge)
Now let's hear it again: फिर मिलेंगे| (phir milenge)
The first word, फिर (phir), means "again," and the second word मिलेंगे (milenge) means "We will meet."
Let's look at another expression. The word नमस्ते| (namasTe), as seen in the previous lesson, also means "good-bye."
Now let’s hear it slowly once again: नमस्ते| (namasTe)
नमस्ते| (namasTe)
As we learned in the last lesson, the more formal or plural नमस्कार| (namaskaar) is also an appropriate choice when parting.
Let’s break it down by syllable: नमस्कार| (namaskaar)
Now let's hear it again: नमस्कार| (namaskaar)
A variation of फिर मिलेंगे| (phir milenge), is फिर मिलते हैं| (phir milTe hain), which literally means "We meet again."
Let’s break it down by syllable: फिर मिलते हैं| (phir milTe hain)
Now let's hear it once again: फिर मिलते हैं| (phir milTe hain)
Another less common expression that means "good-bye" is the Urdu word अल्विदा| (alviDaa).
Let’s break it down by syllable: अल्विदा| (alviDaa)
अल्विदा| (alviDaa)
अल्विदा| (alviDaa) literally means "farewell."

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so गुड लक! (guud Lak!), which means "good luck" in Hindi.
