INTRODUCTION
Manasi: [Namaste hindipod101.com mein swagat hai]
Maya: Welcome back to Basic Bootcamp Lesson 5. Counting from 100 to 10,000 in Hindi. This is the last lesson in the five part series that will help you ease your way into Hindi.
Manasi: We will go over all the basics that will really help you understand Hindi in a quick and easy way.
Maya: In this lesson, we will venture into higher number territory from 100 to 10,000.
Manasi: You will be listening to two people at an auction.
Maya: And they will be bidding over an item, clearly it must be an incredible item because they each keep trying to outbid the other and the price keeps rising.
Manasi: Hmm I wonder what it is.
Maya: It’s a brand new sari. The bidding starts at 100 rupees. Now let’s listen to the conversation.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Maya: Poor Priya walked away with nothing but Swati seems to have got that beautiful new sari. How much did she pay for it?
Manasi: Well she paid 10,000 rupees for that.
Maya: Sounds like a lot for a sari. It must have been a really nice one or maybe she just really wanted it.
Manasi: Hmm yeah maybe it was studded with diamonds.
Maya: Okay so they were shouting out a lot of big numbers in this conversation. Let’s take a closer look at how to put them together.
VOCAB LIST
Maya: In the last Bootcamp lesson about numbers, we learned that to say 12 in Hindi is
Manasi: [baarah]
Maya: And 13 is
Manasi: [tehrah]
Maya: And so on. How about 21
Manasi: [ikkis]
Maya: And so on up to 99 which is
Manasi: [ninyanve]
Maya: And then near the end of the lesson, we learned that 100 is
Manasi: [ek sau]
Maya: It’s exactly the same with English. 100 is the combination between 1 and 100 which is
Manasi: [ek sau] and also just called [sau] like 100 in English.
Maya: So here is the question. How do we start forming numbers over 100?
Maya: Well it’s very simple actually. We just take [ek sau] and then put the number after it.
Manasi: That’s correct. For example, 101 is [ek sau] plus [ek]
Maya: How about 111?
Manasi: That’s [ek sau] and [gyarah]. So it comes to [ek sau gyarah]
Maya: You can see again, the pattern is the same. Now let’s go through multiples of 100. 100 all the way up to 900. Manasi, please,
Manasi: Okay, to create multiple 100s, we put the number in front of [sau].
Maya: Okay so let’s start from 100.
Manasi: [ek sau]
Maya: Literally 100. How about 200?
Manasi: [do sau]
Maya: Literally 200. How about 300?
Manasi: [teen sau]
Maya: 400
Manasi: [char sau]
Maya: 500
Manasi: [paanch sau]
Maya: 600
Manasi: [ch: sau]
Maya: How about 700?
Manasi: [saat sau]
Maya: 800
Manasi: That would be [aath sau]
Maya: And 900
Manasi: [nau sau]
Maya: Before moving on, let’s just recap them one more time. 100
Manasi: [ek sau]
Maya: 200
Manasi: [do sau]
Maya: 300
Manasi: [teen sau]
Maya: 400
Manasi: [char sau]
Maya: 500
Manasi: [paanch sau]
Maya: 600
Manasi: [ch: sau]
Maya: 700
Manasi: [saat sau]
Maya: 800
Manasi: [aath sau]
Maya: 900
Manasi: [nau sau]
Maya: And 1000 which is a new word.
Manasi: [hazar] which means a 1000. [hazar] means 1000. It is similar to 100 like you say 1 before a 100. Therefore 1000 is [ek hazar]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Maya: Now as you guessed it, the pattern is going to stay the same. Let’s go to 2000.
Manasi: [do hazar]
Maya: 3000
Manasi: [teen hazar]
Maya: 4000
Manasi: [char hazar]
Maya: 5000
Manasi: [paanch hazar]
Maya: And 6000
Manasi: [ch: hazar]
Maya: 7000
Manasi: [saat hazar]
Maya: 8000
Manasi: [aath hazar]
Maya: And 9000
Manasi: [nau hazar]

Lesson focus

Maya: Now let’s introduce a complex number so that we can see how it’s all put together. Up until now, we’ve been using pretty simple numbers.
Manasi: I am glad you think it’s simple.
Maya: Yeah well, very easy numbers. 3000, 4000. Let’s just pick up a random number but one that’s a little more complex like 3592.
Manasi: Umm okay.
Maya: So we start out with 3000
Manasi: [teen hazar]
Maya: 500
Manasi: [paanch sau]
Maya: 92
Manasi: [baanave]
Maya: Put it all together and we get
Manasi: [teen hazar paanch sau baanave]
Maya: 3592 and there it is. These are the building blocks for you to count all the way from 1 to 10,000.
Manasi: Just keep in mind the few exceptions and you will be all set.
Maya: Now we did say that we’d go up to 10,000. So let’s talk about that number for a moment because it’s important.
Manasi: Yes because in English, you can just say 10,000. It’s the same in Hindi.
Maya: So what’s the word for 10,000?
Manasi: [das hazar]
Manasi: [das hazar] means 10,000. Okay so let’s go over the keywords from this lesson. First, what’s a 100 again?
Manasi: [ek sau]
Maya: 1000
Manasi: [ek hazar]
Maya: And 10,000
Manasi: [das hazar]
Maya: There you have it. Now Manasi, I think there is one more number that we really should cover.
Manasi: And what’s that?
Maya: How about zero?
Manasi: That’s [shunye]
Maya: [shunye] Can you say it one more time?
Manasi: [shu-n-ye]
