INTRODUCTION
Maya: Namaste, I'm Maya. Welcome back to HindiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 18 - A Perfect Indian Man!
Udita: Namaste, मैं उदिता हूँ। (main uDiTaa huun.). I'm Udita. In this lesson, you'll learn how to use "also" and "too" in Hindi.
Maya: The conversation takes place at a cafe.
Udita: It's between Kate and Arti who are talking about Arti’s fiance.
Maya: Since they are friends, they will be using informal Hindi.
Udita: Let's listen to their conversation.
DIALOGUE
केट (ket): क्या अमित लम्बा है? (kyaa amiT Lambaa hai?)
आरती (aaraTii): हाँ, वह काफ़ी लम्बा है। (haan, vah kaafii Lambaa hai.)
केट (ket): क्या वह समझदार भी है? (kyaa vah SamajhaDaar bhii hai?)
आरती (aaraTii): हाँ, वह बहुत समझदार भी है। (haan, vah bahuT SamajhaDaar bhii hai.)
Maya: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
केट (ket): क्या अमित लम्बा है? (kyaa amiT Lambaa hai?)
आरती (aaraTii): हाँ, वह काफ़ी लम्बा है। (haan, vah kaafii Lambaa hai.)
केट (ket): क्या वह समझदार भी है? (kyaa vah SamajhaDaar bhii hai?)
आरती (aaraTii): हाँ, वह बहुत समझदार भी है। (haan, vah bahuT SamajhaDaar bhii hai.)
Maya: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
केट (ket): क्या अमित लम्बा है? (kyaa amiT Lambaa hai?)
Kate: Is Amit tall?
आरती (aaraTii): हाँ, वह काफ़ी लम्बा है। (haan, vah kaafii Lambaa hai.)
Arti: Yes, he is quite tall.
केट (ket): क्या वह समझदार भी है? (kyaa vah SamajhaDaar bhii hai?)
Kate: Is he intelligent too?
आरती (aaraTii): हाँ, वह बहुत समझदार भी है। (haan, vah bahuT SamajhaDaar bhii hai.)
Arti: Yes, he is very intelligent too.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Udita: Okay Maya, let’s talk weddings in India.
Maya: Indian weddings have always been a grand affair and involve a lot of preparation, especially when you are catering for 500-1000 people.
Udita: Yes, it’s a huge gathering!! Every community has its own wedding traditions and ceremony, and it typically lasts three days or more.
Maya: It’s very colorful too with different bright colors like red, burgundy, orange and gold, which are typical of Indian weddings. Even the Indian wedding dresses, called "sari" or "lehenga," have to be bright and vibrant, which is very different from the white wedding gowns worn in the west. The groom’s outfit is usually ornately decorated as well.
Udita: It’s so different! Also, the wedding arrangement has to be grand and full of colors, especially in Hindu weddings. Flower decorations, tents, and seating arrangements all have to have bright color schemes.
Maya: Food has a special place in a wedding, with a variety of Indian delicacies being served to the guests.
Udita: All of these things combined make Indian weddings a truly memorable experience.
Maya: Listeners, if you ever get the chance to go to one, don’t pass it up! Okay, now let’s move onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Maya: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Udita: First, we have काफ़ी (kaafii). It’s an adverb in Hindi that means "quite," so काफ़ी लम्बा (kaafii Lambaa) means "quite tall."
Maya: You may know by now that लम्बा (Lambaa) meaning "tall" is an inflecting adjective and when used for a male, it would be काफ़ी लम्बा (kaafii Lambaa). If you are a female speaker, you say,
Maya: काफ़ी लम्बी (kaafii Lambii).
Udita: Learning how to use Hindi adverbs is very important, because this structure is used in everyday conversation. The more you master it, the more you get closer to mastering the Hindi language.
Maya: Ok, we used another adverb in our conversation. Listeners, can you guess it?
Udita: It was बहुत (bahuT) which means "very."
Maya: So, बहुत समझदार (bahuT SamajhaDaar) means "very intelligent." Did you know that समझदार (SamajhaDaar) is a non-inflecting adjective, so it doesn’t change no matter what the noun?
Udita: That means it can be used to refer to both males and females. So if I want to say, "Ram is very intelligent," that’s राम बहुत समझदार है। (raam bahuT SamajhaDaar hai.).
Maya: How would you say "Udita is very intelligent?"
Udita (laughs): Simply replace "Ram" with "Udita", so the sentence would be उदिता बहुत समझदार है। (uDiTaa bahuT SamajhaDaar hai.). Listeners, can you guess a few other non-inflecting adjectives in Hindi? Remember, they’re the ones that don’t change with the gender or number of the noun.
Udita: The general rule is that if the adjective doesn’t end in -अ (-a), it will not inflect. For example, सुन्दर (SuNDar) is a non-inflecting adjective.
Maya: Another example is the adjective साफ़ (Saaf). So, it can be used for both masculine and feminine objects.
Udita: That’s easy, isn’t it!
Maya: Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Maya: In this lesson you’re going to learn the usage of "also" and "too" in Hindi.
Udita: Let's start with learning how to say "me too" in Hindi. "Me" is मैं (main), and "too" is भी (bhii), so it becomes मैं भी (main bhii).
Maya: So if you wanted to say, "This apple is red" you’d say...
Udita: यह सेब लाल है। (yah Seb LaaL hai.). Here Here यह (yah) means "this," सेब (Seb) means "apple," लाल (LaaL) means "red," and है (hai) means "is," which altogether translates as "this apple red."
Maya: We just learned how to use भी (bhii), now try to say in Hindi "This flower is red too."
Udita: यह फूल भी लाल है। (yah phuuL bhii LaaL hai.). Here, यह (yah) means "this," फूल (phuuL) means "flower," भी (bhii) means "too," लाल (LaaL) means "red," and है (hai) means "is." So it literally translates as "this flower too red is" but means "This flower is red too."
Maya: In the above example, we are comparing two nouns — "apple" and "flower." In such cases, we place the भी (bhii) immediately after the second noun, so it sounds like यह फूल भी लाल है। (yah phuuL bhii LaaL hai.). Let’s try another example. How would you say "Sita is dancing."
Udita: It would be सीता नाच रही है। (SiiTaa Naac rahii hai.)
Maya: And how about "Rita is ALSO dancing?"
Udita: रीटा भी नाच रही है। (riitaa bhii Naac rahii hai.)
Maya: Great. Now how would you say "This house is big. It is beautiful too."
Udita: In this case, we are talking about one subject only, "house." Here, the placement of भी (bhii) is a bit different. भी (bhii) must be placed close to the second adjective, just like it is in English. So we would say, यह घर बड़ा है। यह सुन्दर भी है। (yah ghar badaa hai. yah SuNDar bhii hai.). यह (yah) means "this," घर (ghar) means "house," बड़ा (badaa) means "big," सुन्दर (SuNDar) means "beautiful," भी (bhii) means "too" है (hai) means "is."
Maya: Here’s a final example. "This car is new. It is big too."
Udita: यह गाड़ी नई है। यह बड़ी भी है। (yah gaadii Nayii hai. yah badii bhii hai.)
Maya: That’s not so hard, is it listeners? You just need to practice it to get the hang of it. Let's once again see how this grammar point was used in the dialogue.
Udita: Kate asks Arti, क्या अमित लम्बा है? (kyaa amiT Lambaa hai?) which means "Is Amit tall?"
Maya: Kate asks if he is intelligent too. She says क्या वह समझदार भी है? (kyaa vah SamajhaDaar bhii hai?) which means "Is he intelligent too?"
