Hi, everybody!
Do you know what monsters Indian people are scared of? In this lesson, you'll learn about three scary monsters in India.
Let’s start with the most popular monster.
नाग
[slowly] नाग
It means cobra.
Nagas are mythical snake-beings that originated in Hinduism.
The nagas are very poisonous, dangerous creatures. When angered, these enormous snakes would spread disease and cause misfortune. They are often considered the protectors of holy scripture.
That sounds pretty scary, right?
You might have heard about the next monster. The next one is...
मंकीमैन
[slowly] मंकीमैन
It can be translated as Monkey Man in English.
The Monkey Man is a short, scary half-monkey, half-man.
At night, the Monkey Man attacks people in the streets of Delhi. It's covered with black hair and has metal claws. It wears a helmet and has red eyes.
Okay. Here's the last monster.
भूत
[slowly] भूत
Have you heard of this next one? This simply means ghost.
Bhoot is the ghost of a dead person in India.
These ghosts can appear as animals, but they usually keep their human shape. Their feet are turned backwards, and they wear white clothes. Often times, lone travelers meet Bhoots on the road.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the names of each monster and repeat after me.
