Generally, Indians use the English "Thank you". This is the most common way to thank someone in spoken language.
But it isn't true that "DHaNyavaaD" isn't used. It is quite common too. In written language, this is the preferred word. People often use it in spoken conversations too. This is the most common word used when ending a speech or lecture in Hindi.
The word "meharabaaNii" is also often used. You can also use "shukriyaa" for thanking.
In short, you have a wide range of words you can use to thank someone :)

friends told me that Indians don't use the Sanskrit धन्यवाद because it means a more serious thing like "I am indebted to you". So I asked what one might say and they suggested मेहरबानी है (roughly "that was kind of you")
