Hi Listeners! What is your favorite Family Member word? Let us know!
नमस्ते (Namaste) Marjorie,
बहुत शुक्रिया (bahuT SHukriyaa) for posting. We are very happy to hear you found it useful. Please let us know if you have any questions 😉
Yes you're right - older sister is "didi" (DiiDii), and younger is "bahaN"."bhaaii" is 'brother', usually younger, and older brother is "bhaiyaa". But sometimes people specify older and younger in this way, by describing them as "badaa bhaaii" (older brother) and "chhotaa bhaaii" (younger brother).
I hope that answers your question!
Mujhe bohut pasand hai mera naam didi. :) When I was in India, I loved being called "didi" as a term of respect and affection. Mei bohut yaad karti hun. :(
I thought that "bhaiya" meant brother, "didi" meant older sister, and "behan" meant younger sister. If "bhai" metlab brother, then kya huwa to the "-ya" on the end? What is the difference between older and younger brothers and sisters?
Yes, that's right - the meaning should be 'parents'. Thank you for pointing it out - we will correct it shortly.
Doesn't mata-pita mean parents?
Yes the romanization is incorrect. It should be "bhaTiijii".
Thank you for pointing it out. We will fix this shortly.
I think there is something wrong with "niece" above as the phrase doesn't match the word?????
