Maya: Welcome to Basic Bootcamp, Lesson 4. Counting from 1 to 100 in Hindi. This five part series will help you ease your way into Hindi. We will go over all the basics that will help you understand Hindi quickly and effortlessly.
Manasi: Yeah it’s fun.
Maya: We promise. In this lesson, you will learn one of the essentials in Hindi or in any language for that matter.
Manasi: Numbers. In this lesson, we will teach you the numbers from 1 to 10.
Maya: That’s a lot. Numbers always sound scary because there is just so many of them.
Manasi: However you don’t need to worry. Hindi numbers are very simple. It’s all about patterns.
Maya: That’s right. Once you know the numbers from 1 to 10 and 20, you can count all the way up to 99 with a few exceptions of course.
Manasi: How easy is that?
Maya: Very! and we will teach you how to do that. Let’s start with the basics. We are going to listen to a conversation now.
Manasi: And where does the conversation take place?
Maya: At the gym. It’s quite Bootcamp like, isn’t it?
Manasi: It is.
Maya: It looks like Aarthi is working out at the gym and counting to keep track of her progress.
Manasi: And her coach is making her keep going.
Maya: Sounds like a tough coach but let’s give it a listen.

Maya: Really, it’s catching up in America too.
Manasi: Yes it’s very good for the health.
Maya: I suppose so.
Manasi: So as we mentioned earlier, learning Hindi numbers is all about patterns and we are going to explain them to you all in this lesson.
Maya: You have them down in no time but first we need to master the first ten numbers in the language.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Maya: Okay listeners, it’s time to shine. So here is what we want you to do. No matter if you are at home, on the subway, in your car, wherever you are, we want you to talk to yourself out loud.
Manasi: You might get some weird looks but don’t worry. It’s for a good cause.
Maya: And you are going to repeat the numbers that Manasi says. That’s going to be the quickest way for you to learn.
Manasi: Okay here we go. I will read the numbers out loud and give you time to repeat each one after me. Ready [ek,do,teen,char,paanch,ch:,saat,aath,nau,das.]
Maya: Now we are going to take a look at how to put those numbers together.
Manasi: So the numbers from 1 to 10 are something that you have to memorize. As we get past 10, you will notice the pattern developing.
Maya: That’s right. Everything between 10 and 99 is basically just a multiplication equation in words.
Manasi: But in Hindi, the number system is the reverse of English.
Maya: Really. Can you give one example?
Manasi: If you want to say 31, you say 30 plus 1 in English.
Maya: Right.
Manasi: But in Hindi, it becomes [ek] means one plus [tees] which means 30. So it’s called as [iktess] which means 31.
Maya: Wow! That’s amazing and how about 32?
Manasi: It is [ba] the sound for 2 plus [tees] which means 30. So that’s going to be [batees] or 32.
Maya: But wait a minute, [ba] isn’t 2. [do] is 2 right?
Manasi: Well [do] is 2 but for counting numbers after 10, we use [ba] in place of [do].
Maya: That’s interesting. That means every number starts with a number between 1 to 9 and then the multiple of 10.
Manasi: Right. That’s correct.
Maya: Can you give more examples for this combination?
Manasi: Sure. Let’s say 42. Now that’s going to be [beyalis] the sound for 2 and [chalis] which means 40. So it’s [beyalis] or 42.
Maya: What about 52?
Manasi: Now that’s an exception. All numbers from 51 to 58 have 1 at the end. So for example 51 is [ikyavan]. That’s [ek] plus 1 [ikyavan]. Will you try 52?
Maya: Sure it would be [ba] for the sound of 2 plus 1, so [bavaan] right?
Manasi: Correct. Don’t forget to refer to our website and PDF for all the numbers from 1 to 100.
Maya: Okay let’s go back a bit. How do we say the numbers from 1 to 19? What about 11?
Manasi: Another exception [gyarah]. All numbers like 21, 31 all the way up to 91 start with [ek] but 11 is different.
Maya: Can you say it one more time?
Manasi: [gyarah]
Maya: And 12 is

Lesson focus
Manasi: Now there is another trick to learning Hindi numbers.
Maya: And what’s that?
Manasi: In Hindi, numbers ending in 9, we start with [Un] and actually the next multiple of 10 follows.
Maya: Yes I remember. With 19, it was [unnis]. Can you give us another example?
Manasi: Sure 39 is [untaalis] which is [un] plus [chalis]. The next number that is 40. Next example is 49 which is [unachas]. So starting with [un] plus [pachas] which is 50. So it means 49 [unchaas]
Maya: Hmm that’s interesting. It’s a little bit like looking at Roman numerals when IX is 9 whereas XI is 11.
Manasi: Hmm yeah I suppose so. That’s true Maya.
Maya: Okay but there must be some exception right?
Manasi: Yeah there is and numbers from 89 which are [nauasi] and 99 which is [ninyaanve]. They do not start with [un].
Maya: So that’s it. Counting by 10s to 90 is actually a really good way for you to practice numbers from 1 to 10 right?
Manasi: Right.
Maya: All right. I think we are starting to get the hang of it. Now there is a chart for all 1 to 100 numbers inside the lesson notes so you can find everything you need there. Now you can see all the numbers from 1 to 100.
Manasi: Yeah like we mentioned before, once you know the numbers from 1 to 10, you will be able to say all the numbers up to 99.
Maya: Now that you’ve learned some numbers, the key is again application. Practicing any number you see around you in Hindi and watch how quickly you remember them.
Manasi: Practice makes perfect.
Maya: In the next lesson, we are going to count from 101 all the way to 10,000 but here is a little hint. You have the tools to count almost all the way to 9999.
Manasi: That’s right. There are a couple of surprises in there but basically with only a little extra knowledge, you can count all the way up to 9999 with the tools we gave you in this lesson.
Maya: But we will cover all of that in the next lesson.
