| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn vocabulary for fixing and repairing things. The conversation takes place at an electronic goods store. |
| Udita: It's between Priya and a store staff member. |
| Eric: The speakers are strangers in a customer service context, so they will use polite Hindi. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| स्टाफ़: नमस्ते, मैं आपकी क्या मदद कर सकता हूँ? |
| प्रिया : नमस्ते। मैं ने पिछले हफ्ते यहाँ से यह इलेक्ट्रिक हैंड मिक्सर खरीदा था। यह काम नहीं कर रहा है। |
| स्टाफ़: क्या आप ने यहाँ से लिया था? क्या आपके पास रसीद है? |

| Staff: Hello, how may I help you? |
| Priya: Hello. I had bought this electric hand mixer from here last week. It's not working. |
| Staff: You bought this here? Do you have the receipt with you? |
| Priya: Yes here it is. It's hasn’t worked since I used it the first time. |
| Staff: Did it work the first time? |
| Priya: Yes I used it one time, for about five minutes. |
| Staff: Okay, and how did it stop working? |
| Priya: I don’t know, but it just hasn’t been working since yesterday. After that one time, it's not turning on at all. We haven't done anything different since. |
| Priya: Can you please see what the problem is? |
| Staff: Yes of course. This is clearly not working. Can you leave it with us so we can examine what's wrong with it? |
| Priya: I'm going to be needing it today. Can it not be fixed now? |
| Staff: Okay, what we can do is, we'll exchange this and give you another machine. Your warranty card is right here in the box, so we can exchange this right now. |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Eric: So Priya had to return an item in the dialogue because it stopped working. |
| Udita: Yes, like most other places in the world, because she bought the appliance from a store, she was able to return it and get a replacement. |
| Eric: It’s lucky that she kept the receipt and warranty card! If she hadn’t, they might not have accepted the return. |
| Udita: She might have had to use a repairman instead. |
| Eric: Oh, are there special shops where people can take things into be repaired? |
| Udita: There are small shops where you can casually get quick repairs made. Repairmen are everywhere in India. |
| Eric: What kinds of repairs do they do? |
| Udita: All kinds of household goods. For example, you can get your shoes repaired quickly and at a cheap price. |
| Eric: So it’s just small jobs for anyone who asks? |
| Udita: Some repairmen are hired by stores, as their in-house repairman. Similarly, clothing stores hire in-house tailors, to look after the tailoring for the store’s customers. |
| Eric: But if you have a damaged item that you bought from a store and it’s still under warranty, you should try there first. |
| Udita: Yes, definitely. |
| Eric: Okay, now onto the vocab. |

| Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
| Udita: चालू होना |
| Eric: meaning "to start, to work (an object)" What can you tell us about this? |
| Udita: चालू caaLuu is a noun meaning “on” or “working”. It’s a word that is only used to talk about things or machines that are working or running. |
| Eric: And the second word? |
| Udita: होना hoNaa is an intransitive verb meaning “to be”. |
| Eric: So it means “to be turned on” or “to be working”. |
| Udita: Right. You'll hear चालू caaLuu a lot in spoken Hindi. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. पंखा पूरे तेज़ी से चालू है फिर भी कितनी गर्मी है! paNkhaa puure Tezii Se caaLuu hai phir bhii kiTNii garmii hai! |
| Eric: ..which means "The fan is turned up to the highest setting, but it's still so hot!" Okay, what's the next phrase? |

| Eric: meaning "clearly" |
| Eric: What can you tell us about this? |
| Udita: साफ़ Saaf is an adjective that means “clean,” “clear” or “evident”. In this key phrase, the word is repeated साफ़ साफ़ Saaf Saaf. |
| Eric: What does it mean when it is repeated? |
| Udita: The meaning becomes an adverb, so it changes to “clearly”. |
| Eric: How do we use it? |
| Udita: It’s used to talk about things being clear, and can also mean that something is obvious. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
| Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. हमें साफ़ साफ़ बताइए कि झंझट क्या है| hamen Saaf Saaf baTaaie ki jhaNjhat kyaa hai. |
| Eric: .. which means "Please tell us clearly what the problem is." Okay, what's the next phrase? |
| Udita: ज़रुरत पड़ना zaruuraT padNaa |
| Eric: meaning "to need, to require" What can you tell us about this phrase? |
| Udita: ज़रुरत zaruuraT is a noun that means “need” or “requirement”. पड़ना padNaa is a special verb that has several specific uses, but in this example it means “to occur” or “to have”. |
| Eric: So altogether it means “to need” or “to require”. |
| Udita: Yes. This is an intransitive phrase, so you don’t have to specify who or what needs something, just that the need exists. |
| Eric: You can say that “there was a need for new workers”, but you don’t need to specify who had the need. |
| Udita: That’s right. |
| Eric: What’s an example sentence using this phrase? |
| Udita: अहम वक्त पर सबको अच्छे दोस्तों की ज़रुरत पड़ती है। aham vakT par Sabko achhe DoSTon kii zaruuraT padTii hai. |
| Eric: .. which means "Everyone needs good friends at critical junctures.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn vocabulary for fixing and repairing. Udita, how do we ask someone to fix something? |
| Udita: In Hindi, there is no difference between asking “Can you fix X?” and “Can you please help fix X?” |
| Eric: With X being the object that needs fixing, of course. How do you say those in Hindi? |
| Udita: क्या आप X को ठीक कर सकते हैं? kyaa aap X ko thiik kar SakTe hain? |
| Eric: What are the important words in that sentence? |
| Udita: ठीक करना thiik karNaa, which means “to fix” and सकते हैं SakTe hain, which means “can do”. |
| Eric: How do I say “Can you fix the fan?” |
| Udita: क्या आप पंखा को ठीक कर सकते हैं? kyaa aap paNkhaa ko thiik kar SakTe hain? पंखा paNkhaa means “fan”. |
| Eric: The sentence was exactly the same, it just had “fan” in place of “X”. |
| Udita: Yes. That was a polite sentence, but if you want it to be more casual, you can say क्या तुम पंखे को ठीक कर सकते हो? kyaa Tum paNkhe ko thiik kar SakTe ho? |
| Eric: There are a few variations on how to ask questions about repairing objects, so please check the lesson notes for those. |
| Udita: As well as asking someone to fix an object, you'll probably need to know how to describe what the problem is. |
| Eric: That’s right. How do we say something has broken? |
| Udita: The verb “to break” is टूटना tuutNaa. So we can say यह टूट गया है। yah tuut gayaa hai. |
| Eric: That means “This is broken”. |
| Udita: Yes. We used टूटना tuutNaa with the auxiliary verb जाना jaaNaa, which shows that it broke recently. |
| Eric: How do we say “There is something wrong with this”? |
| Udita: इस में कोई गड़बड़ है। iS mein koii gadbad hai. |
| Eric: That’s a good sentence to use if we don’t know exactly what's wrong. |
| Udita: Yes, it is. It uses the noun गड़बड़ gadbad, which means “problem” or “wrong”. |
| Eric: Can you give us another example, using that word? |
| Udita: लगता है इस मिक्सी में कोई गड़बड़ है। Lagtaa hai iS mikSii mein koii gadbad hai. |
| Eric: “It seems like there is something wrong with this mixer.” |
