John: Expressions That Involve Law or Crime
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HindiPod101.com. I'm John.

John: This is Must-Know Hindi Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 10. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions that involve law or crime.
John: These expressions may be linked to law and crime, but you can easily use some of them to express how you feel in a specific situation.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:

John: Shakti, what's our first expression?
Shakti: उलटा चोर कोतवाल को डांटे
John: literally meaning "the thief scolds the head of the police station." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "The culprit blames the accuser."
Shakti: [SLOW] उलटा चोर कोतवाल को डांटे [NORMAL] उलटा चोर कोतवाल को डांटे

John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone who is clearly guilty, but is accusing the person asking him about the wrongdoing. It is similar to the English "the pot calling the kettle black".

Shakti: [NORMAL] मेरे ही घर में चोरी करके इल्ज़ाम मुझ पर लगा रहे हो। उलटा चोर कोतवाल को डांटें। [SLOW] मेरे ही घर में चोरी करके इल्ज़ाम मुझ पर लगा रहे हो। उलटा चोर कोतवाल को डांटें।

John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Shakti: पंछी फंस गया जाल में
John: literally meaning "bird trapped in a trap." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "The culprit caught in the trap, the culprit taking the bait."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to a situation in which you will be executing a plan to catch a culprit, or a plan is executed to catch the culprit and it was successful.

John: literally meaning "a straw in the beard of the thief." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "The guilty feeling that he is being accused when actually he isn't being accused."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone who tends to take anything that's being said or done as being accusatory, although that's not true. It shows that the person is guilty of something, that he is hiding, and that he feels that everyone is pointing fingers at him.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Shakti: [NORMAL] इसे हर बात क्यों बुरी लग रही है? कहीं इसी ने तो रिश्वत लेकर उसका काम गलत तरीके से नहीं किया? चोर की दाढ़ी में तिनका। [SLOW] इसे हर बात क्यों बुरी लग रही है? कहीं इसी ने तो रिश्वत लेकर उसका काम गलत तरीके से नहीं किया? चोर की दाढ़ी में तिनका।
John: "Why is he taking every statement to heart? Is it possible that he is the one who has taken the bribe and done the work illegally for the other person? A straw in the beard of the thief."
Shakti: [NORMAL] इसे हर बात क्यों बुरी लग रही है? कहीं इसी ने तो रिश्वत लेकर उसका काम गलत तरीके से नहीं किया? चोर की दाढ़ी में तिनका।
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Shakti: जेल की हवा खाना
John: literally meaning "to get air in the prison." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be in jail."
Shakti: [SLOW] जेल की हवा खाना [NORMAL] जेल की हवा खाना

John: Use this slang expression when someone is in jail or may go to jail, or you want to threaten someone that you will send them to jail.

Shakti: [NORMAL] जेल की हवा खाने का बहुत शौक़ है तो सामने आकर अपना चेहरा दिखा। [SLOW] जेल की हवा खाने का बहुत शौक़ है तो सामने आकर अपना चेहरा दिखा।
