| Hi, everybody! |
| Do you know how to say “Bye” in Hindi? In this lesson, you'll learn three parting expressions in Hindi. |
| Let’s start with the easiest one. |
| नमस्ते| |
| [slowly] नमस्ते| |
| This means "Goodbye" in Hindi. |
| NamasTe means both "hello" and "goodbye." |
| If you know you are going to see the person again, there is a different phrase you should use. |
| फिर मिलेंगे। |
| [slowly] फिर मिलेंगे। |
| This means "See you later" in Hindi. |
| The first word, phir, means "again," and the second word, milenge, means "we will meet." |
| If you want to sound like a pro, here's a phrase for you. |
| अल्विदा| |
| [slowly] अल्विदा| |
| This means "Farewell" in Hindi. |
| This is not as commonly used as other expressions, but you will sometimes hear it in Hindi. So make sure to remember this, too. |
| Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me. |
| "Goodbye." |
| नमस्ते| |
| * beep |
| नमस्ते| |
| "See you later." |
| फिर मिलेंगे। |
| * beep |
| फिर मिलेंगे। |
| "Farewell." |
| अल्विदा| |
| * beep |
| अल्विदा| |
| Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact! |
| In the expression phir milenge, most speakers pronounce phir as [fir]. The [f] sound doesn't exist in Hindi, but the sound [fa] can be represented as a variation of [pha] in Hindi. This is why many speakers consider these two sounds interchangeable. |
