Survival Phrases lesson 9 - Learn Hindi Using Hindi with This Unbelievably Simple Phrase
There will be many times when the Hindi around you or coming at you is fast and furious, and you may not catch any or all of it. In instances such as this, asking the speaker to say it again can prove the difference between understanding a crucial piece of information and spending the rest of the day trying to figure out what they just said. The following phrase will not only give you a better sense of the language, but it will also help you tune your ear as well!
In Hindi, "Can you repeat that please?" is kyaa aap Dohraa sakTe hain?
kyaa aap Dohraa sakTe hain?
Let’s break it down by syllable: kyaa aap Dohraa sakTe hain?
Now let's hear it once again: kyaa aap Dohraa sakTe hain?
The first word, kyaa, is a question marker, followed by the polite form aap Dohraa sakTe hain? which literally means "Can you repeat?"
We use it when addressing a male speaker, while for addressing a female, you would have to say kyaa aap Dohraa sakTii hain?
Thus, you would only have to replace sakTe with sakTii.
kyaa aap Dohraa sakTii hain?
To recap, we have kyaa aap dohraa sakTe hain? when addressing a man, and kyaa aap Dohraa sakTii hain? when addressing a woman.
Literally, this means "Can you repeat, please?"
Let's look at a different expression that has a similar use. This is phir se boliye?
phir se boliye?
Let’s break it down by syllable: phir se boliye?
Now let's hear it once again: phir se boliye?
The first two words, phir se, mean "again," followed by the polite form boliye, which literally means "Will you speak, please?" To recap, we have phir se boliye. Literally, this means "Will you repeat, please?"
At times, even repeating the words isn't enough to understand the speaker. This is often due to how fast the person is speaking. For instances such as this, you can use the phrase "Slowly." In Hindi, "Slowly" is DHiire se.
DHiire se.
Let’s break it down by syllable: DHiire se.
Now let's hear it once again: DHiire se.
To recap, we have DHiire se.
Another way to say "Slowly" in Hindi is DHiire-DHiire.
Let's hear it again: DHiire-DHiire.
Literally, this means "Slowly please."
We can use the phrases we have seen together.
"Can you repeat slowly please?" kyaa aap DHiire se Dohraa sakTe hain?
kyaa aap DHiire se Dohraa sakTe hain?
Here, we have the form for addressing a male.
The form for addressing a female is kyaa aap DHiire se Dohraa sakTii hain?
kyaa aap DHiire se Dohraa sakTii hain?
