A: Top 25 Hindi Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 16: How are you? in Hindi (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hindi learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""How are you?"" In Hindi this is
B: आप कैसे हो?
The first word in the question is
B: आप
A: ""meaning you "" in English.
B: (Slow, by syllable) आप
A: Listen again and repeat.
B: आप

A: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
B: कैसे
A: meaning how .
B: (Slow, by syllable) कैसे
A: Now repeat.
B: कैसे
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
B: आप कैसे
{pause}
And after that
B: हो
A: meaning are.
B: (Slow, by syllable) हो
A: Now repeat.
B: हो

Listen to the entire question and repeat.

A: ""I'm fine.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

A: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
B: मै
A: meaning I .
B: (Slow, by syllable) मै
A: Now repeat
B: मै
{Pause}
A: And next
B: अच्छा
meaning fine .
B: (Slow, by syllable) अच्छा
A:Now repeat.
B: अच्छा
{Pause}
A: And after that
B: हूँ
meaning am .
B: (Slow, by syllable) हूँ
A:Now repeat.
B: हूँ
{Pause}
A: Listen to the speaker say, I'm fine., and then repeat.
B: मै अच्छा हूँ
{pause}
A: To expand on the pattern, replace fine with ok .
B: ठीक
A: ok
B: (slow) ठीक (regular) ठीक
A: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ok
B: मै ठीक हूँ
A: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace fine. Say I'm ok .

B: मै ठीक हूँ
A: To expand on the pattern, replace ok with sad.
B: उदास
A: sad
B: (slow) उदास (regular) उदास
A: Listen to the phrase again, this time with sad
B: मै उदास हूँ
A: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for ok . Say I'm sad.

B: मै उदास हूँ
A: To use a different phrase, replace sad with happy.
B: खुश
A: happy
B: (slow) खुश (regular) खुश
A: Listen to the phrase again, this time with happy
B: मै खुश हूँ
A: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for sad. Say I'm happy .

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting India and someone asks you how you are. You are fine. Respond to the question.

A: Now imagine you are ok Respond to the question.

A: Imagine you are sad. . Answer the speaker's question.
B: आप कैसे हो? (five seconds) मै उदास हूँ
A: Imagine you're happy . Respond to the question.
B: आप कैसे हो? (five seconds) मै खुश हूँ
A: You want to ask someone how they are doing. Ask the question
(5 seconds)

A: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.

You make a valid and absolutely correct comment here. With "aap" the correct usage is "hain" and with "Tum" it is "ho.


The only thing is that in spoken Hindi, the rules of correct grammar are often ignored. So, people do often use "ho" with "aap".


If you want to be absolutely correct in grammar, use "hain" with "aap".

I thought that since 'aap' was polite or formal, that you had to use 'hain' with aap, and that you used 'ho' with 'tum'. Why is 'ho' used with 'aap' in this sentence?
