A: Top 25 Hindi Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 18: What are you doing? in Hindi (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Hindi learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""What are you doing?"" In Hindi this is
B: आप क्या कर रहे हो?
The first word in the question is
B: आप
A: ""meaning you"" in English.
B: (Slow, by syllable) आप
A: Listen again and repeat.
B: आप

A: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
B: क्या
A: meaning what .
B: (Slow, by syllable) क्या
A: Now repeat.
B: क्या

Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
B: आप क्या
{pause}
And next
B: कर रहे
A: meaning doing .
B: (Slow, by syllable) कर रहे
A: Now repeat.

Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.

A: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
B: मै
A: meaning I.
B: (Slow, by syllable) मै
A: Now repeat
B: मै
{Pause}
A: And next
B: सिर्फ
meaning just.
B: (Slow, by syllable) सिर्फ
A:Now repeat.
B: सिर्फ
{Pause}
A: And after that
B: सोच रहा
meaning thinking.
B: (Slow, by syllable) सोच रहा
A:Now repeat.
B: सोच रहा
{Pause}
A: And next
B: हूँ
meaning am .
B: (Slow, by syllable) हूँ
A:Now repeat.

A: Listen to the speaker say, I'm just thinking. and then repeat.
B: मै सिर्फ सोच रहा हूँ

A: To expand on the pattern, replace thinking with relaxing.
B: आराम कर रहा
A: relaxing
B: (slow) आराम कर रहा (regular) आराम कर रहा
A: Listen to the phrase again, this time with relaxing
B: मै सिर्फ आराम कर रहा हूँ
A: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace thinking. Say I'm just relaxing.

B: मै सिर्फ आराम कर रहा हूँ
A: To use a different phrase, replace relaxing with seeing.
B: देख रहा
A: seeing
B: (slow) देख रहा (regular)
A: Listen to the phrase again, this time with seeing

A: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace relaxing. Say I'm just seeing .

A: To expand on the pattern, replace with listening.
B: सुन रहा
A: listening
B: (slow) सुन रहा (regular)
A: Listen to the phrase again, this time with listening
B: मै सिर्फ सुन रहा हूँ
A: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace seeing. Say I'm just listening.

B: मै सिर्फ सुन रहा हूँ
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting India and someone asks you what you're doing. You are thinking. Respond to the question.
B: आप क्या कर रहे हो? (five seconds) मै सिर्फ सोच रहा हूँ
A: Now imagine you are relaxing Respond to the question.
B: आप क्या कर रहे हो? (five seconds) मै सिर्फ आराम कर रहा हूँ
A: Imagine you are . . Answer the speaker's question.
B: आप क्या कर रहे हो? (five seconds) मै सिर्फ देख रहा हूँ
A: Imagine you're . Respond to the question.
B: आप क्या कर रहे हो? (five seconds) मै सिर्फ सुन रहा हूँ
A: You want to ask someone what they are is doing. Ask the question

That was good.


Just do add the "na" sound at the end of "main". Like this,


Main ab hindi seekh rahee hoon.


Also, if you want to indicate "right now", use "abhii". So, you have:

main abhii hiNDii Siikh rahii huun.

Yes you are correct. Also in Hindi, the verb always comes in the end of the sentence. So your sentence will correctly form as:


हिंदी सीख रहा हूँ (Hindii Siikh rahaa hũũ (Learning Hindi))


Also the verb in Hindi is gender sensitive. So if it is male it will be: रहा (rahaa) and if it is female, it will be: रही (rahii)
