| In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb achhaa lagnaa. |
| In this lesson, we will learn how to use aanaa,, another very common Hindi verb. |
| aanaa means "to come" in Hindi, and we use it a lot! So let’s go! |
| Imagine a friend of yours is organizing a road trip and he asks you: kyaa Tum humare saath aa rahii ho? That means "Are you coming with us?" and would be said in this way only to a female. If someone were to say this to a male, they would simply change the rahi to rahe. |
| So supposing you want to go too, if you’re a female you would say, haan, main Tumhare saath aa rahii hoon! That means "Yes I’m coming with you!" |
| A male would say |
| haan, main Tumhare saath aa rahaa hoon! |
| So let’s break down this answer: |
| First we have: |
| haan which is simply "Yes." |
| Then main, which is "I" in Hindi |
| After that we have Tumhare, which is a pronoun meaning “you” |
| Then comes saath which means “with” or “together with” |

| Finallylly we had aa rahii which is like saying “are going” if you are a woman. If you are a man, simply change it to aa rahaa. |
| Finally, we have hoon. |
| So, all together it is haan, main Tumhare saath aa rahii hoon! |
| In Hindi, aanaa is exactly the same as "to come." in English |
| It is a very common verb that you should be careful not to mix up with jaanaa, which only means "to go to", as we’ve seen before. |
| aanaa is often used to suggest an invitation to someone. If you are organizing a party, for example, you can invite a female guest by asking her, kyaa Tum merii paarty mein aa rahii ho? That is "are you coming to my party?" |
| To ask a male guest, you could say: kyaa Tum merii paarty mein aa rahe ho? |
| To answer this question, you can simply say, haan, main aa rahii hoon if you are female or |
| haan, mein aa rahaa hun if you are male. |
| Here you said "Yes, I am coming." |
| Again, for a male the answer would be |
| haan, main aa rahaa hoon |
| and for a female |
| haan, main aa rahii hoon |
| The verb aanaa is also often used as an order or as motivational advice. For example, you can say, mere saath aao! "Come with me!" |
| (slow) mere saath aao! |
| In this case, gender makes no difference. |
| Now it’s time for Prerana’s Points |
| aanaa is a very useful word on its own. It becomes aao if you want to invite someone in but in an informal way. If you want to make this formal, it becomes aaiye. If someone is at your doorstep and you want him or her to step inside, you simply add anDar before it. In an informal sentence it becomes anDar aao which means “Come in!” To say it more formally, you’ll want to say anDar aaiye. |
