Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
आपका जन्मदिन कब है? (aapakaa jaNmaDiN kab hai?)
चार मार्च को है। (caar maarc ko hai.)
Once more with the English translation.
आपका जन्मदिन कब है? (aapakaa jaNmaDiN kab hai?)
“When is your birthday?”
चार मार्च को है। (caar maarc ko hai.)
“It's on March 4th.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?"
The pattern is:
[event] कब है? ([event] kab hai?)
This Hindi sentence translates as "[event] when is?" But it means “When is [event]?”.
For example:
आपका जन्मदिन कब है?, आपका जन्मदिन कब है? (aapakaa jaNmaDiN kab hai?, aapakaa jaNmaDiN kab hai?)
Now, how do you answer this question?
चार मार्च को है। (caar maarc ko hai.)
Listen to it again:
चार मार्च को है।, चार मार्च को है। (caar maarc ko hai., caar maarc ko hai.)
This Hindi sentence literally translates as "Fourth March on is." But it means "It's on March 4th.".
