INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HindiPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 10 - Are You Getting the Information You Need in India? Eric Here.
Udita: नमस्तेNamaSTe I'm Udita.
Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask about the possibility of making a request using the negative question form. The conversation takes place over the phone.
Udita: It's between Naina and a member of the staff.
Eric: The speakers are strangers in a customer service context, so they'll be speaking polite Hindi. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
नैना : हैलो, मैं ने अगले हफ्ते के विधिक सम्मलेन में भाग लेने के लिए दस दिन पहले रेजिस्टर किया था मगर आज तक उसकी जानकारी नहीं मिली है।
स्टाफ़: जी नमस्ते। आप पंद्रह तारीख के विधिक सम्मलेन की बात कर रहे हैं?
नैना : हाँ वहीं। योजना बनाने के लिए जानकारी अब तक तो मिलनी चाहिए थी।
स्टाफ़: जी बिलकुल, हम इस हफ्ते के अंत तक सम्मलेन की जानकारी सब प्रतियोगिओं को भेजेंगे, क्यूंकि रेजिस्ट्रेशन शुक्रवार को बंद होता है।
स्टाफ़: आप को अपनी रेजिस्ट्रेशन की सूचना मिली थी न?
नैना : हाँ सूचना तो मिली है लेकिन बाकी के डिटेल्स क्या थोड़ी जल्दी नहीं भेज सकते?
स्टाफ़: माफ़ कीजिए, हमारे नियमों के मुताबिक हम बाकी की जानकारी सारे प्रतियोगिओं को इकट्ठे ही भेज सकते हैं।
स्टाफ़: लेकिन आप चाहें तो कार्यक्रम की जो ज़रूरी जानकारी है मैं आपको अभी बता सकता हूँ।
नैना : अच्छा, तो क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि एयरपोर्ट से होटल तक का रस्ता हमें खुद तय करना है या गाड़ियाँ आयोजित है?
स्टाफ़: गाड़ी आयोजित नहीं है लेकिन होटल की अपनी बस सर्विस है जो एयरपोर्ट से निकलती है, आप उसका इस्तेमाल ज़रूर कर पाएंगे।

स्टाफ़: गाड़ी आयोजित नहीं है लेकिन होटल की अपनी बस सर्विस है जो एयरपोर्ट से निकलती है, आप उसका इस्तेमाल ज़रूर कर पाएंगे।
Eric: Listen to the conversation with the English translation
Naina: Hello, I had registered for the legal convention next week ten days ago, but I haven't received the information for it yet.
Staff: Hello. You're talking about the legal convention taking place on the fifteenth?
Naina: Yes that's the one. We should have received the information by now for planning purposes.
Staff: Yes definitely. We plan on sending the information out to all the participants by the end of this week because the registration closes on Friday.
Staff: You did receive the confirmation for your registration, right?
Naina: Yes, I received the confirmation but couldn’t you send the details a little earlier?
Staff: I'm sorry, according to our rules we have to send all the information out to all the participants together.
Staff: However, if you like I can tell you the necessary program details.
Naina: Okay. Can you please tell me whether we have to plan for our travel from the airport to the hotel on our own, or whether there are cars organized for this?
Staff: We haven't organized cars for the travel, but the hotel has a bus service for taking people there from the airport. You may use that if you wish.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Naina had a few questions for the convention organizers.
Udita: That’s right. And although the staff member couldn’t send the details Naina wanted, they did their best to tell her verbally.
Eric: Is that typical of the service culture in India?
Udita: Well, yes. Generally, it's very personalized and flexible. The industry has really exploded in India over the last 15 years.
Eric: The staff member in the dialogue was certainly both of those things.
Udita: Right. Customer service staff try to accommodate the requests of their customers as much as possible. They know that it's expected of them.
Eric: Even the unusual and exceptional ones?
Udita: Especially those!
Eric: But what if the customer wants something that can’t be given?
Udita: Then managers will try to do whatever they can to please the customer.
Eric: I guess there’s always a way, even if it isn’t the ideal way.
Udita: Right! Or you can find a satisfactory alternative.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first is..
Udita: के मुताबिक ke muTaabik
Eric: meaning "according to"
Eric: What can you tell us about this?
Udita: First, मुताबिक muTaabik is an adverb that means “according”. के ke is the possessive particle that means “of”.
Eric: So together they mean “according to”.
Udita: In English, we would say “according to X”, but in Hindi it’s opposite.
Eric: Like “X to according”?
Udita: X के मुताबिक X ke muTaabik, yes.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. मैं ने डॉक्टर के उपदेश के मुताबिक दवा ली। main Ne dauktar ke upDes ke muTaabik Davaa Lii.
Eric: ..which means "I took medicine according to the doctor's instructions." Okay, what's the next phrase?
Udita: रस्ता तय करना raSTaa Tay karNaa
Eric: meaning "To make your way".
Eric: Can you break this down for us?
Udita: रस्ता raSTaa is a noun meaning “road”, “path” or “way”. तय Tay is a noun meaning “decide” and करना karNaa is the transitive verb meaning “to do”.
Eric: Ah, we’ve come across that last one many times in these lessons.
Udita: True. We use this phrase to talk about getting from one place to another. Taken literally, it means ‘to decide the way’, which actually means ‘to make your way’.
Eric: How do we say “to make your own way”?
Udita: Add खुद khuD meaning “self” so you get रस्ता खुद तय करना raSTaa khuD Tay karNaa
Eric: Okay. Can you give us an example using the phrase?
Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. मुझे अपना रास्ता अकेले तय करना आता है।
Eric: .. which means "I can make my own way, alone."
Eric: Okay, what's the next word?
Udita: इकट्ठा ikatthaa
Eric: meaning "together, altogether"
Eric: What can you tell us about this word?
Udita: It’s an adjective that's usually used with large groups of people.
Eric: Only large groups?
Udita: Well, it can apply to any group of two or more.
Eric: How is this adjective used?
Udita: इकट्ठा ikatthaa is used before verbs in a sentence and means to do that verb together.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this word?
Udita: Yes, for example.. हम इकठ्ठा काम करेंगे तो काम जल्दी खत्म होगा। ham ikatthaa kaam kareNge To kaam jaLDii khaTm hogaa.
Eric: .. which means "If we work together we can finish it quickly."
Eric: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Udita: In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask about a possibility or make a request using the negative question form.
Eric: What do you mean by “using the negative question form”?
Udita: In Hindi, we often use a negative question. Like, for example, instead of saying “this would be okay”, we would say “wouldn’t this be okay?”
Eric: How do we make these sentences?
Udita: We start the sentence with क्या kyaa, which turns the sentence into a question. To make the question negative, we use नहीं Nahiin. To talk about possibility, we use the verb सकना SakNaa meaning "can be".
Eric: Let’s make a sentence then. How about “Can’t this be done?”
Udita: The equivalent of that in regular Hindi will be “Is this not possible?” which is क्या यह नहीं हो सकता? kyaa yah Nahiin ho SakTaa?
Eric: Can we change these sentences easily?
Udita: Yes, we just swap the verb.
Eric: Can you give us an example?
Udita: क्या यह नहीं मिल सकता? kyaa yah Nahiin miL SakTaa?
Eric: This literally means “Can this not be found?” but it is like saying “Can’t we get this?”
Udita: That was using an intransitive verb, so I’ll give you an example with a transitive verb. क्या यह नहीं कर सकते हैं? kyaa yah Nahiin kar SakTe hain?
Eric: Which means “Can’t we do this?”
Udita: We can switch out the pronouns too. क्या इसे बड़ा नहीं कर सकते हैं?kyaa iSe badaa Nahiin kar SakTe hain?
Eric: “Can’t this be made bigger?”
Udita: Another point of using negative questions is that we can use them as an inquiry, but also as a suggestion.
Eric: Of course, when you’re asking if something can be made bigger, you’re also actually asking for it to be made bigger.
Udita: Right. This type of question can come in handy in a shop when you want to check for further information.
Eric: Or, if you want to ask someone to accommodate your needs. So, can we not have an example?
Udita: Well done! Of course.
Eric: Let me introduce a scenario. I’m in a store and I have spent too much and I don’t have enough cash, so I want to pay by credit card.
Udita: Hmm, you could say - मेरे पास पूरे पैसे नहीं है, क्या कार्ड से पेमेंट नहीं कर सकते हैं? mere paaS puure paiSe Nahiin hai, kyaa kaard Se pemeNt Nahiin kar SakTe hain?
Eric: Which means “I don’t have the full cash amount - can’t I pay by credit card?”
Udita: Here is another: क्या आप तीन पीस खरीदने का कोई डिस्काउंट नहीं दे सकते हैं? kyaa aap Tiin piiS khariiDNe kaa koii diSkaunT Nahiin De SakTe hain?
Eric: This is like saying “Couldn’t you give us a discount for purchasing three pieces together?”
