| Akash: Hello sir, this is Akash speaking. I would like to talk to you about the house. We'd like to know more in detail about the apartment house you've found. Can we talk now? |
| Staff: Yes hello Mr. Akash, sure, let's talk now. I think this apartment will be perfect for you. |
| Akash: Where is it located and what kind of apartment is it? |
| Staff: It's in Gurgaon, near the Delhi-Gurgaon border. It's in an apartment complex, with 5 apartment buildings together and around 30-40 houses in each building. |
| Staff: There's a market a couple minutes out of the complex, where you can get all the basic groceries. |
| Akash: Okay, and what facilities does the complex have? |
| Staff: It has good security, parks and gardens with spaces for all ages—young and old. That is it at the moment, but they may add a gymnasium as well. |
| Akash: Right. When was this place built? |
| Staff: Only five years ago. This is an expanding, emerging area. In a few years there will be much more around as well. |
| Akash: All right. And please tell me about the house—how many rooms and what is the size? |
| Staff: Yes the size is as we discussed, according to what you wanted. There is a big living-dining room, two bedrooms, a separate kitchen, and two washrooms. |
| Staff: There is a good balcony as well. |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Eric: Akash is looking for a new house. |
| Udita: Yes, it seems that the estate agent has found him an apartment house that will suit his needs. |
| Eric: Yeah, it sounds pretty nice! What is housing like in India? |
| Udita: The houses are made to suit the climate and conditions of that region. In a lot of the country, houses are made from cement, with high ceilings and ceiling fans. |
| Eric: Oh, because of the long hot summers. |
| Udita: Right. Roofs are usually flat but have walls around them, so it’s safe to go up there and relax. People even hang their washing out on their roof. |
| Eric: That’s cool! What about apartment buildings, like Akash was looking at in the dialogue? |
| Udita: “Flats”, as they are called, have balconies, usually to make up for the lack of a garden and roof. |
| Eric: You said that the type of housing depends on the climate and conditions, so how do things change? |
| Udita: In villages, the houses are more like small cottages and are sometimes made from mud, clay, tin and straw. |
| Eric: What about in the colder parts of India? Is it still concrete? |
| Udita: No, they are usually made out of wood and have lower ceilings to try and keep the warmth in. |

| Udita: विस्तार viSTaar is a noun that means “detail” or “explanation” and में mein is a particle that means “in” |

| Udita: We use this phrase to ask for greater details or explanation. |
| Eric: So we don’t want just a brief explanation, but a more detailed one. |
| Udita: Right. It acts like an adverb and goes before the verb in a sentence. |

| Eric: ..which means "Please sit down and tell us in full detail". Okay, what's the next phrase? |
| Udita: बच्चे-बूढ़े bacce-buurhe |
| Eric: meaning "young and old, all ages" |
| Eric: What can you tell us about this phrase? |
| Udita: It’s made up of two words. The first is बच्चे bacce, which means “children” and बूढ़े buurhe, which is the plural of the adjective बूढ़ा burhaa meaning “old”. |
| Eric: So the two words basically mean young and old, child and old person? |
| Udita: Yeah, so it’s the same as saying "all ages" or "of all ages". |
| Eric: When is this phrase used? |
| Udita: It’s an informal phrase used quite often in speech and not as often in formal writing. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
| Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. यह फिल्म बच्चे-बूढ़े - पूरा परिवार साथ बैठकर देख सकता है। yah fiLm bacce-buurhe puuraa parivaar SaaTH baithkar Dekh SakTaa hai. |
| Eric: .. which means "This movie is for all ages - the whole family can sit together and watch the movie." |
| Eric: Okay, what's the next word? |
| Udita: उभरना ubharNaa |
| Eric: meaning "to emerge" |
| Eric: What can you tell us about this? |
| Udita: उभरना ubharNaa is an intransitive verb. It can be used for a literal or metaphorical emergence. |
| Eric: Oh, right. How is it most commonly used? |
| Udita: We often use it to talk about the process of people coming to lead their field of work or rising to success. |
| Eric: People who have emerged as leaders in their fields. |
| Udita: Right. It’s also often used for objects, such as something floating to the top of the water’s surface. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. यह बात हमारे रिसर्च से उभरकर सामने आयी है। yah baaT hamaare riSarc Se ubharkar SaamNe aayii hai. |
| Eric: .. which means "This point emerged through our research." Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Udita: Going back to the dialogue, Akash asked many questions about the apartment that the estate agent had found for him. |
| Eric: They were all important questions we need to know before we move. |
| Udita: Yes, moving to a new house is an important event, and we need to make sure that we make the right choice and have all of the information. |
| Eric: So let’s talk about how we can get this information in Hindi. |
| Udita: Okay, a simple but important sentence pattern is किस तरह का kiS Tarah kaa. |
| Eric: And this means “What type of...” So we can use this to ask “What kind of building is it?” or “What kind or apartment is it?” Udita, how do we say “What type of house is it?” |
| Udita: किस तरह का घर है kiS Tarah kaa ghar hai? |
| Eric: And this phrase is especially useful if you are renting. You may need to ask “What kind of services are there?” |
| Udita: किस तरह की सुविधाएं हैं kiS Tarah kii SuviDHaaen hain? |
| Eric: In the lesson notes there are several words that will be useful when asking about housing in India, so be sure to check the lesson notes later! Sometimes if you ask a question like, “What kind of services are there?”, you may not get a complete answer. |
| Udita: That’s true. The estate agent might just tell you a couple. |
| Eric: So how do we ask about all of the services? |
| Udita: You need to use क्या क्या kyaa kyaa. क्या क्या सुविधाएं हैं kyaa kyaa SuviDHaaen hain? |
| Eric: That means “What are all of the services available?” |
| Udita: Another useful sentence using this is घर में क्या क्या इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स है ghar mein kyaa kyaa iLektrauNiks hai? |
| Eric: “What are all of the electronic appliances in the house?” |
| Udita: There are many things you need to consider before choosing a house or apartment in India. |
| Eric: Hmm, earlier in this lesson you talked about the open roofs that people like to relax and dry washing on. How do I ask if a house has one of those? |
| Udita:क्या घर के साथ छत है kyaa ghar ke SaaTH chaT hai? |
| Eric: “Is there an open roof attached?” |
| Udita: The Hindi word for “roof” is छत chaT. Another word you might want to know is बाल्कनी baaLKaNii. |
| Eric: Which means “balcony”. There is a vocabulary list in the lesson notes for different parts of the house, but let’s have a little fun with that and do a short quiz. Udita, can you give me two words in Hindi from that list, and we’ll give our listeners a chance to guess the English meaning. |
| Udita: Okay. रसोई raSoii and सीढ़ी Siidhii. |
| Eric: Listeners. do you know what those words mean? Udita, can you give us the answers? |
| Udita: रसोई raSoii is “kitchen” and सीढ़ी Siidhii is “stairs.” |
| Eric: Can we do 2 more? |
| Udita: Sure. These 2 words are similar but different: द्वार Dwaar and दरवाज़ा Darvaazaa. |
| Eric: Listeners, what do you think those words means? Udita, can you tell us? |
| Udita: Yes, द्वार Dwaar is ‘entrance’, so the entrance of an entire home or unit, and दरवाज़ा Darvaazaa means ‘door’, for any doors anywhere. |
