Lesson focus

Survival Phrases lesson 23, Traveling by Bus in India.
In the previous lesson, we covered how to get a bus ticket. So now that you have your ticket, get ready to jump on your bus and start the tour. But wait a second, before you get on the bus you need to confirm if it's going to your destination.
We can accomplish this by asking, maaf kiijiye Bandra jaaTi hai?
maaf kiijiye Brandra jaaTi hai?
maaf kiijiye Bandra jaaTi hai?
Or "Excuse me, does this bus go to Bandra.
Or you could change Bandra to the destination where you want to go. As you can see, you can omit "this bus" in Hindi because it's easy to understand that you are referring to it. You have maaf kiijiye, which you know very well by now.
Next, you have the destination name, and then jaati hai? which is the third person female verb jaaTii or "to go." Finally, you have hai, which is the same as "is."
Let’s break down this sentence and hear it one more time: maaf kiijiye …… jaTii hai?
maaf kiijiye …… jaTii hai?
maaf kiijiye …… jaTii hai?
Another way of asking if the bus is going past somewhere, is to ask maa-f kii-ji-ye Andheri se gujarTii hai? Here, you have replaced jaTii hai or “does it go” with the verb gujarTii hai or “does it pass.”
maa-f kii-ji-ye Andheri se gujarTii hai?
maa-f kii-ji-ye Andheri se gujarTii hai?
You could replace Andheri with the destination that you want to refer to.
Let's imagine now that you are in Agra and you have to go to the Taaj mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a very famous landmark in India. What would you ask the bus driver? Another way of asking if the bus stops is by saying maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal jaaTii hai?
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal jaaTii hai?
Or "Excuse me, does this bus go to The Taj Mahal?"
In this sentence, you have the same structure.
Let’s break it down by syllable and hear it one more time: maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal jaaTii hai?
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal jaaTii hai?
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal jaaTii hai?
Asking if the bus stops somewhere is maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal rukTii hai?
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal rukTii hai?
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal rukTii hai?
Again, all that changes is the verb, which we changed to rukTii or "does it stop."
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal rukTii hai?
maaf kiijiye, Taaj mahal rukTii hai?
Or "Excuse me, does it stop at Taj Mahal?"
Imagine that you are visiting a city for the first time, you have no idea of the distances between your favorite destinations, and you need to ask the bus driver how long the bus takes. Taaj mahal ko kiTnii Der hai?
Taaj mahal ko kiTnii Der hai?
Taaj mahal ko kiTnii Der hai?
Or "How long does it take to Taj Mahal?"
You can change Taj Mahal to wherever your destination is.
We use the word ko in Hindi to translate the English word “to.”
This is followed by kiTnii Der in Hindi for "how long." In English, we can translate it as "how long/how much." Then you have Der, which means "time" or "hour." This followed by hai “is.”
Let’s break down the sentence and hear it one more time: ko kiTnii Der hai
ko kiTnii Der hai
Finally, all you have to do is add the place you wanna go to. It’s as simple as that.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrases and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so गुड लक! (guud Lak!), which means "good luck" in Hindi.
