John: Must-Know Hindi Social Media Phrases Season 1. Lesson 18 - A Sightseeing Trip.
John: Hi, everyone, I'm John.
Shakti: And I'm Shakti.
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to post and leave comments in Hindi about visiting a landmark. मीरा (miiraa) visits a famous landmark, posts an image of it, and leaves this comment:
Shakti: इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद, आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा। (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD, aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa.)
John: Meaning - "Despite living in Agra for so many years, saw the Taj Mahal for the first time today." Listen to a reading of the post and the comments that follow.

POST
John: Listen again to मीरा (miiraa)'s post.
Shakti: इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद, आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा। (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD, aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa.)
John: "Despite living in Agra for so many years, saw the Taj Mahal for the first time today."
Shakti: (SLOW) इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद, आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा। (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD, aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa.) (Regular) इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद, आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा। (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD, aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa.)
John: Let's break this down. First is an expression meaning "Despite living in Agra for so many years."
Shakti: इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD)
John: The last word of this expression is…
Shakti: baavajuuD
John: It means “despite,” and it’s placed at the end of a sentence, unlike English. So the phrase…
Shakti: iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD
John: means “despite living in Agra for so many years," even though the word “despite” is placed at the end. Listen again - "Despite living in Agra for so many years" is...
Shakti: (SLOW) इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD) (REGULAR) इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD)
John: Then comes the phrase - "saw the Taj Mahal for the first time today."
Shakti: आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा (aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa)
John: Here, we have the phrase…
Shakti: pahlii baar
John: which means “first time.” Listen again - "saw the Taj Mahal for the first time today" is...
Shakti: (SLOW) आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा (aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa) (REGULAR) आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा (aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa)
John: Altogether, "Despite living in Agra for so many years, saw the Taj Mahal for the first time today."
Shakti: इतने साल आगरा में रहने के बावजूद, आज पहली बार ताज महल को देखा। (iTNe Saal agra mein rahNe ke baavajuuD, aaj pahlii baar Taaj mahal ko Dekhaa.)
